- SHAREDEBATE INTERNATIONAL
- =========================
-
- "An International Debate Forum for PC Users
- Concerned About the Present & the Future"
-
- In the Spring of 1990, Applied Foresight, Inc. released its first
- issue of ShareDebate International, a ShareWare diskette magazine,
- which is a quarterly debate forum for PC users by PC users who are
- concerned about the present and the future.
-
- Ben Bova, former editor of OMNI & ANALOG magazines & author of more
- than 60 books (lately CyberBooks), released a public statement on
- April 9, 1990, about ShareDebate International. Mr. Bova writes
- "Electronic publishing has arrived! ShareDebate International is a
- bold, exciting venture that deserves the attention & support of
- everyone who seeks to create a better tomorrow."
-
- Issue 1 is can be downloaded from many bulletin boards including:
-
- * Compuserve as DBATE1.EXE in the Science Fact library of the SCI-FI
- forum;
-
- * GENIE as DBATE001.ZIP (file 17976) in Library 3 of the IBM PC S/W
- Library;
-
- * Byte's BIX as DBATE001.EXE in the filearea, IBM.UTILS; and
-
- ShareDebate International is carried by two major "shareware
- wholesalers" who exclusively service member shareware distributors:
-
- * ShareWare Distributor's Network (SDN!Works) as DBATE001.SDN (this
- BBS is mostly for 238 member BBS sysops in 9 countries).
-
- If you have a ShareWare BBS and you want to know more about SDN,
- here is the info:

- pm and 10 pm daily and anytime on weekends).
-
- Issue 1 is also on ShareWare CD-ROM collections:
-
- * It is PC-SIG disk number 2121 and is on its Spring 1990 CD-ROM disk
- (PC-SIG, 1030-D East Duane Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086).
-
- * Reportedly, orders for ShareWare Gold CD-ROM by Quanta Press also
- includes ShareDebate International (Quanta Press, 2239 Carter Ave.,
- PO Box 8044, St. Paul MN 55108).
-
- Many BBSs and diskette-only based ShareWare distributors carry
- ShareDebate International -- too numerous to mention here.
-
- All ShareWare distributors who notify Applied Foresight Inc. that they
- carry ShareDebate International will receive past and future issues.
-
- R.H. Martin, president of Applied Foresight, Inc. (POB 20607,
- Bloomington MN 55420), and an accomplished author, is the editor. He
- has a Master's degree in Sociology (dual undergraduate minor in
- Science and Political Science), a diploma in data processing, four
- years in the research world, and 12 years in the world of computers.
-
- The magazine uses a feature-rich diskette-publishing ShareWare
- software package, Iris, which is by UserWare (no connection to Applied
- Foresight Inc., however AFI is a registered user of Iris). For more
- about Iris, write UserWare, 4 Falcon Lane East, Fairport NY 14450.
-
- The Charter issue advances six debate forums and solicits non-fiction
- and fiction writers to deal with the issues. Writers and editors are
- provided with a payment schedule. Subscription is $25 per year.
-
- The debate forums established in the first issue deal with a National
- Interest Project-Level Stock Market; Occupational Representation vs
- Geographical Representation for Voter Districting; Computer Modeling
- Future Cities to Fight the Greenhouse Effect and Strengthen the
- Economy; Japanese vs U.S. Patent Law; Economic Impact of Corporate
- Income Tax; and the Existing Cost of Government Intervention in Health
- Areas.
-
- A distributor identification capability is built into the magazine,
- along with a commission schedule, so that readers can become
- distributors and earn money copying the magazine, whether they
- subscribe or not.
-
- Hardware Requirements: IBM PC, PC-compatible or MS-DOS computer 384k
- RAM, 1 floppy drive.
-
- Other Requirements: DOS 2.1 or higher.
-
-
- SPECIAL INCENTIVE FOR SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTORS
-
- ShareWare distributors, sysops, and user groups are given extra
- encouragement to distribute ShareDebate International (so are user-
- readers, subscribers or not!). This is perhaps one of the few, if
- any, ShareWare deals that reward non-registered customers!
-
- ShareWare Distributors who distribute this diskette magazine and send
- me proof (catalog or advertisement) will be paid as if a subscriber
- (normally, non-subscribing users are eligible for a smaller
- commission scale). Tell me your self-assigned ID (use menu 7 entry
- to print it out). You'll then earn a $5 commission for each of your
- customers who then subscribe. This is a nested one-level deep
- distribution commission program (not a pyramid scheme) -- all nested
- sales only carry current and prior ID information. In other words,
- referral subscriptions to ShareDebate made by the efforts of your
- customers will not return a commission to you (only to the referring
- person actually doing the copying/distributing). See menu entries 7
- and 8 of the magazine for complete details.

- A SHORT & SWEET DESCRIPTION OF SHAREDEBATE
- INTERNATIONAL FOR YOUR MS-DOS SHAREWARE CATALOG
-
- ShareDebate International, a ShareWare diskette magazine, is a
- quarterly debate forum for PC users by PC users who are concerned
- about the present and the future. About this magazine, Ben Bova,

-
- DBS-KAT FILE LIBRARIAN PACKAGE
- ==============================
-
- DBS-KAT is an internationally liked diskette cataloger for power users
- since 1986. DBS-KAT is one of the "Best-Rated ShareWare Programs,
- Honorably Mentioned Within the Computing Com-munity Media" by Don's
- Directory (January 1990 edition -- Write Don's Directory, Box 30166,
- Philadelphia PA 19103).
-
- DBS-KAT has long been carried by many of the major ShareWare diskette
- & CD-ROM distributors (it is disk 537 on the PC-SIG CD ROM).
-
- In every current issue of PC COMPUTING and COMPUTER SHOPPER, two large
- shareware distributors carry full page ads that include DBS-KAT (The
- Software Labs and FreeWare Unlimited).
-
- DBS-KAT is available for downloading on three major bulletin boards:
-
- On Byte's BIX, it is DBSKAT.EXE in the filearea, IBM.UTILS.
-
- On GENIE, it is DBSKAT.ZIP in the IBM PC Software Library (Library 5).
-
- On Compuserve, it is DBSKAT.EXE. It is currently in the IBMSYS
- Utilities Forum Library 0 (new uploads), but should be eventually
- moved to the forum library 9 (disk library).
-
- Note: As of 4/28/90, Version 2.24 is the current version of DBS-KAT on
- the above three boards. The only real difference between 2.24 and 2.25
- is the file viewing software used. Although written permission from
- Vernon Buerg was obtained to use LIST.COM & LIST.DOC for version 2.24,
- the wording inside LIST.DOC made a few sysops/shareware distributors
- hesitant to distribute it. ML.EXE was found to be an excellent
- replacement & its documentation is less imposing on distributors, as
- well as it's author, Gil Yoder, also agreed to allow distribution of
- his file viewing software & documentation with DBS-KAT.
-
- With DBS-KAT(R), Version 2.25, online manual reading is supported
- through use of Gil Yoder's Mouse Lister (ML) program, which is made
- available on shareware terms to DBS-KAT users (it comes on the
- ShareWare diskette) via written permission of Gil. For full use of ML
- as a stand alone program, refer to the help file by pressing F1 after
- invoking ML (or by printing out the HELP.ML file by typing: COPY
- HELP.ML PRN). (A mouse is not needed to use ML -- it works great
- without a mouse--I don't even have a mouse myself.)
-
- DBS-KAT is for hard disk owners who want information about their
- diskette library in one compact database for quick & flexible inquiry.
- It accommodates 9,999 diskettes (or removeable disk cartridges) & up
- to 16 million filenames! No data entry is required, but optional
- information is supported. Inquiry is more flexible than the DOS DIR
- command. All documentation is on diskette. For IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 &
- compatibles w/hard disk, 384K RAM & DOS 3.0 or greater.
-
- DBS-KAT is a complete multi-media file librarian for hard disk owners.
- In addition to cataloging diskettes and removable cartridges, it
- manages files on any media that is accessible by DOS commands for
- search, backup and disk cleanup operations. In addition, DBS-KAT
- provides a feature-rich print formatter for plain ASCII text files
- (such as source code files), and includes a program to create menu
- operations inside DOS batch files.
-
- 1. Program Title: DBS-KAT (r) Multi-Media File Librarian Package.
- Short Title: DBS-KAT (r) File Librarian Pkg, Ver. 2.25.
-
- 2. Who is the intended user: PC Hard Disk Owners.
-
- 3. Unique features of the program (why is the program better?):
-
- * Huge capacity (9,999 diskettes; 16,000,000 filenames).
-
- * Minimal data-entry orientation. After creating a single system
- control record, the only manually-entered data-entry information
- is a 4 digit volume ID for each diskette and that is only
- required once if the diskette is given that 4 digit ID as an
- actual volume label.
-
- * Ability to automatically record subdirectory information of
- cataloged diskette filenames (if the file resides on a
- subdirectory on the diskette).
-
- * Hard disk file librarian program combined with diskette
- cataloger (KATSCAN).
-
- * Super-featured print file utility program included with diskette
- cataloger (KPRINT).
-
- 4. Program's capacity or limitations:
-
- A single DBS-KAT database can not exceed: (1) the free space on
- disk drive containing the database, or (2) 9,999 diskettes or (3)
- 16,000,000 filenames. When anyone of these three conditions is
- met, a database can not handle any more additions.
-
- 5. Does the program require any special system requirements other
- than 256K memory, one floppy disk drive, and a monitor. If yes,
- please list them:
-
- * DOS 3.0 or greater.
-
- * Must have either a hard disk drive or in place of the hard disk
- drive, a second floppy disk drive that is 720K or greater.
-
- * Must have 256KB memory free (not just installed).
-
- 6. What is the registration fee for your program?
-
- * $27.50 for USA residents. See KATORDER.FRM inside the DBS-KAT
- archive, self-extracting archive program file, DBSKAT.EXE, for
- complete details. In short, the benefits are:
-
- - Free 1 year subscription to ShareDebate International diskette
- magazine.
-
- - Online BBS support; latest edition; lifetime updates for only
- a small shipping/handling charges; commission program;
- advanced DB maintenance utility diskette.
-
- 7. List of files and a description of each file on the distribution
- diskette:
-
- READ ME A short introductory note. To be read first.
- DBSKAT EXE A self-extracting LHARC archive file of DBS-KAT
- files (it also includes the file, READ.ME)
-
-
